A free, fast micro-course on postpartum depression and new mama mental health.

PPD 101 is a 30-minute course on postpartum depression (PPD) and other perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. It's designed for, and dedicated to, new mothers, new fathers, and anyone who loves them. And it's FREE!

This course is for anyone who wants to...

+ Be more prepared for their first year of parenthood.

Parenthood is full of unexpected surprises and things you can't plan for. But learning the basics of perinatal mental health (like postpartum depression) helps you have more control over your experiences as a parent and as a person.

+ Support a new mom or dad in a life-changing way.

Postpartum depression and other perinatal mood disorders affect entire families, and support from family, friends, and other community is critical. Once you know the basics, you can help new parents take the steps to experience every day differently.

+ Learn how to stop the stigma around postpartum depression, and how to stand with the 1 in 5 new moms who experience it.

Though postpartum depression is common, it's still not widely discussed. Many mamas feel ashamed talking about their experience, and it prevents them from getting the help that's out there. That's why Ritual Care has made this course available completely free of charge. Please learn more, love more, and share your new knowledge with as many people as possible.

What to expect...

  • Feel more prepared and less worried during your baby's first year
  • Spot the signs of postpartum depression (PPD) right from the start
  • Know how to help yourself or your loved one through PPD
  • Get support long after the course is over with clear, downloadable resources and referrals
  • Finish the whole course in less time than it takes to get a pedicure (or watch your favorite Netflix episode if, ya' know, you're having trouble leaving the house with your newborn)

What you'll learn...

  • Signs of PPD, baby blues, and related experiences
  • 2 major "myths" about PPD that most parents miss completely
  • How to self-assess for PPD in just a few minutes
  • What types of treatment can make PPD more manageable

+ I think I have postpartum depression (PPD). Will this course treat my symptoms?

This is course can educate about, but not diagnose or treat, postpartum depression and other perinatal mood disorders. It includes a section on treatment options, but the course itself is not a diagnosis or treatment. PPD 101 was developed by a postpartum doula trained in perinatal mental health, and has been reviewed by a professional licensed clinical social worker specializing in the field. However, it is not certified by any institution or organization, and it is not a substitute for licensed professional therapy or other support. If you have symptoms of any perinatal mood disorder (such as PPD), this is a great start, but please reach out to a licensed therapist, your doctor, or a postpartum organization for diagnosis, treatment, and other care (and, in severe cases, please reach out to your nearest hospital emergency room). PPD 101 is a wonderful complement to your therapeutic work with professional support.

+ I'm having a baby, but I feel great and I've never been depressed. Why should I take this course?

While prior depression is a risk factor for postpartum depression, it isn't a pre-requisite. Newborns are demanding little beings and, especially when sleep-deprived, new parents can experience PPD without having any history of depression. Plus, while about 1 in 5 moms experience PPD, at least 4 in 5 have a related experience called "baby blues." This course will teach you the difference between the two, and how to get help for each.

+ I'm a papa/partner. Since PPD affects new moms, shouldn't she learn about it and then tell me how I can help her?

This is a great course for mamas and papas to take together! Moms need to know about PPD because they're the most commonly affected. But dads should learn about it, too, for 3 main reasons: (1) when mom is "in" the experience, she may not see the symptoms or be able to help herself; (2) even if mom is aware of her PPD symptoms, they might feel too "heavy" for her to explain to you what she needs; and (3) dads and partners can get PPD, too! So, spend the next 30 minutes watching together, and know it's a brilliant investment in your parenting relationship.

+ What is the difference between PPD 101 (COMPLETE) and PPD 101 (BASIC)?

There are 2 versions of PPD 101: Complete and Basic. When you get the Complete version, you'll have access to 3 video lessons, audio recordings of the lessons, the course transcript, and the full, 15-page PPD Care Kit with lesson summaries and notes, tips, exercises, resources, and referrals. You'll also receive Ritual Care's email updates. If you choose the Basic version, you'll get the 3 video lessons and an excerpt of the PPD Care Kit called "Required Resources." With Basic, you won't receive Ritual Care email updates and your email address will be used only for course access.

Excellent course. I love the design, it's clear and easy to use, and the resources are super-informative without being overwhelming — they even have a good amount of white space for my notes so everything stays in one place!

Lynne, Mama to 1 + Clinical Social Worker and PPD Survivor

PPD 101 is a must for every new or expecting parent. I wish I'd had this tool when I was pregnant — it's straightforward, easy to understand, and empowering. As a mom, sister, and friend, this course reminded me how important it is that we talk to each other about the hard stuff, ask for help when we need it, and educate ourselves about how to help our friends and family when we see the signs of postpartum depression (and other moods). I can't wait to share this incredible resource with the ones I love.

Whitney, Mama to 1 + Attorney

This course is an excellent tool for all expecting parents. Clear, informative, and easy to use, it de-stygmitizes mental and emotional health issues so new moms and dads can better understand their own experiences during pregnancy and the year following birth. The sections are short but powerful — a great entry point for new and expecting parents to talk about these very real, very important aspects of becoming a family.
